Social Media Manager Resume: Sections, Bullet Examples and Skills

By · Updated

A social media manager resume should show the platforms you ran, what you made, and what changed because of it. Lead with a short summary, give each role three to five bullets with results, list the tools and skills the posting names, and link to the work itself.

What should a social media manager resume show?

It should show that you can grow and run a brand’s social presence, with proof: the channels, the content, and the results. A hiring manager reading it wants to know three things quickly. Which platforms have you run, at what scale? Can you make content people stop for? Did it move anything the business cares about?

The third point is where most first drafts need work. It’s natural to list duties ("managed Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn"), but duties tell the reader what the job was; outcomes tell them how well you did it. Turning one into the other is usually a matter of adding a sentence.

The general rules of a good marketing resume all apply, and our marketing resume guide covers them in full. This page is about what’s different for social.

Which sections should a social media manager resume have?

Use the standard order, with one addition: a clear link to your work near the top.

Section What goes in it
Header Name, city, email, phone, LinkedIn, and a portfolio link
Summary Two or three lines: your level, platforms, specialty and one result
Experience Each role with three to five bullets, newest first
Skills Platforms, tools and craft skills the posting asks for
Education and certifications Degree if you have one; platform certifications if relevant

Keep it to one page unless you have well over ten years of experience.

How do you write a social media manager resume summary?

Write two or three lines that say what kind of social marketer you are and what you’ve achieved. Skip adjectives like “creative” and “passionate”; the bullets have to prove those anyway.

Social media manager with [number] years running [platforms] for [type of brand: consumer apps, beauty, B2B software]. Built [program: a creator program, a short-form video series, a community] that [result]. Strongest at [specialty: short-form video, community management, paid social, social listening].
Social media coordinator moving into a manager role. Ran day-to-day publishing for [brand] across [platforms], wrote and edited [type of content], and [result: grew a channel, launched a new one, cut response times].

Change the specialty line for each application so it matches what the posting leads with, then read it aloud and reword anything that doesn’t sound like you. A social team is hiring a voice, and the summary is the first place they hear yours. More examples are in resume summary examples.

What makes a strong social media resume bullet?

A strong bullet names what you did, how, and what happened. The formula is action, method, result, with context if the number needs it.

[Action verb] [what you did] by [how], which [result] over [time period].

Results for social aren’t only follower counts. Pick the ones that match the job:

If you don’t have exact numbers, use the closest honest version: “grew from a standing start”, “the brand’s best-performing post of the year”, “adopted as the team’s standard”. Never round up or borrow the team’s total as your own. Interviewers will ask how you got the number.

How do you write a social media resume with no experience?

You write it around projects instead of job titles, and you treat each project exactly like a job. Plenty of social managers started this way, and a hiring manager for a junior role mostly wants proof that you can run an account with a goal in mind.

If you’re aiming at a first social job, the social media coordinator guide shows what that role asks for. Pick one project now and write its heading and two bullets, even roughly; the rest of the resume gets easier once one section exists.

What skills should a social media manager put on a resume?

List the platforms, tools and skills the posting asks for that you can back up in an interview. A skills section is for scanning; the bullets do the proving.

Type Examples
Platforms Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Threads, X
Publishing and listening tools Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Later, Sprinklr, Brandwatch
Creative tools CapCut, Premiere Pro, Canva, Figma, Photoshop
Paid Meta Ads Manager, TikTok Ads Manager, LinkedIn Campaign Manager
Analytics Native platform analytics, GA4, Looker Studio
Craft skills Short-form video, copywriting, community management, creator partnerships, social listening, crisis response

Only list tools you’ve used. If a posting names a tool you haven’t touched but you’ve used its competitor, say the one you know; the skills transfer, and you can say so in the interview. Our social media manager job description breaks down which skills each type of social role needs, and marketing skills covers the wider list.

Put one clean link in your header, to a page you control, that shows your best work. Social hiring managers will click it, often before they finish reading.

Our marketing portfolio guide covers case studies and how to show results honestly.

How do you tailor a social media manager resume to a posting?

Read the posting for its top three asks, then make sure your summary and first bullet under each role speak to them. Social roles vary more than the title suggests.

Match the posting’s words where they’re accurate. If they say “short-form video” and you wrote “Reels and TikToks”, use their phrase. Applicant tracking systems and busy readers both look for it. When you’re ready to write the letter that goes with it, see our social media manager cover letter examples.

Common social media manager resume mistakes

Mistake Fix
Listing platforms as duties Say what you did on each and what happened
Follower counts with no context Add the starting point, time period or comparison
Vanity metrics only Include at least one business result if you have one
No link to the work Add one portfolio link to the header
A designed resume with columns and icons Keep it simple so it reads correctly in applicant tracking systems
Every tool you’ve opened once List what you could use on day one

Getting help tailoring it

Once your base resume is solid, the work is in matching it to each posting. Recon reads the posting and your resume, then suggests line-by-line rewrites that use only facts already on your resume, with placeholders where a line needs a number you haven’t given.

FAQ

How long should a social media manager resume be?

One page for most people. Two pages are fine for a head of social or someone with more than ten years of experience, as long as the second page still earns its place.

Should a social media manager resume be creative?

Keep the resume itself clean and readable, and put the creativity in the portfolio. Heavily designed layouts can break in applicant tracking systems and slow down the reader.

What if I’ve only run social for small accounts?

Show growth and craft rather than scale. Going from a small base to a bigger one, a post that outperformed, or a format you invented all count. Freelance, volunteer and personal accounts count too if you say what they were.

Should I include follower counts?

Include them when they show growth or scale you were responsible for, with a time period. A follower count you inherited says little about you.

Do I need certifications for a social media manager job?

They’re rarely required. Platform or tool certifications can help an entry-level resume, but a strong portfolio matters far more.
