Marketing Consultant Resume: Examples, Client Work and Summary
A marketing consultant resume should read like a record of problems solved for clients. List your consulting business as one employer with dates, then group the engagements under it, each with the client type, the problem, what you did and the result. Lead with a summary that names the kind of marketing you're hired for.
Key takeaways
- A marketing consultant resume lists your own consulting business as one employer, with your engagements grouped underneath it, rather than a separate entry for every client.
- Each engagement bullet works best as the client type, the problem, what you did and the result, such as a repositioning that lifted demo requests.
- You can describe a client by industry and size, such as "a Series B fintech", when a confidentiality agreement stops you naming them.
- Consultants applying for in-house roles should show they can own results over time, not only deliver recommendations and leave.
- A firm consultant lists the firm as the employer and the client projects as bullets, the same way an agency marketer would.

What should a marketing consultant resume show?
A marketing consultant resume should show that clients bring you in to fix something specific and that things are measurably better when you leave. Whoever reads it, a firm’s partner, a hiring manager or a prospective client, is asking the same question: what kind of problem does this person solve, and do they have proof?
That means three things matter more than a list of every client you’ve had:
- A clear specialty. Positioning for B2B software, paid acquisition for DTC brands, go-to-market for healthcare launches. A consultant who does “all marketing” is hard to place.
- Results per engagement. What changed in the client’s numbers or capability because of your work.
- Range of clients. Industries, company sizes and the level you worked with (founders, CMOs, product teams).

How do you list client work under your own business?
List your consulting business as one employer, with one set of dates, and put the engagements underneath it. A resume with eight short entries for eight clients reads as job-hopping; one entry with eight strong bullets reads as a practice.
[Your Business Name or "Independent Marketing Consultant"] · [City or Remote] Marketing Consultant / Founder · [Month Year] – Present [One line: what you're hired for and for whom, e.g. "Positioning and launch strategy for B2B software companies, Seed to Series C."] - [Client type and size]: [problem]. [What you did]. [Result, with a number if you have one]. - [Client type and size]: [problem]. [What you did]. [Result]. - [Client type and size]: [problem]. [What you did]. [Result]. - Selected clients: [names you're allowed to share, or industries if you can't name them].
A few rules make it work:
- Use a business name if you have one. “Independent Marketing Consultant” is fine too. Don’t invent an agency name to look bigger.
- Name clients only when you’re allowed to. Check your contracts. If a confidentiality clause applies, describe the client: “a national pet food brand”, “a 200-person cybersecurity company”.
- Put the biggest or most relevant engagements first, not the most recent.
- Give long engagements their own line. A two-year retainer as acting head of marketing deserves more than a bullet. You can add a sub-entry: “Interim Head of Marketing (contract), [Client], [dates]”.
If you consulted between full-time jobs, the same format covers the gap honestly: one entry with real client work is much stronger than a blank year.
What do good marketing consultant resume bullets look like?
Each bullet should carry the client, the problem, your work and the outcome. Here are examples by specialty, with [placeholders] for your own numbers. Use them as patterns; swap in your own phrasing, because the way you’d explain the work to a client is usually the best way to write it.
| Specialty | Example bullet |
|---|---|
| Positioning and messaging | Repositioned a Series A HR software company from “all-in-one” to payroll compliance for multi-state employers; rewrote the website and sales deck, and demo requests rose [X]% in the next quarter. |
| Go-to-market | Built the launch plan for a [category] product entering [market], including pricing tiers, channel mix and sales enablement; the launch hit [X] of [Y] first-quarter targets. |
| Paid acquisition | Audited and restructured paid social for a DTC skincare brand, cutting cost per acquisition from $[X] to $[Y] on a $[Z] monthly budget. |
| Marketing operations | Rebuilt lead scoring and routing in [CRM] for a 50-person sales team, raising marketing-qualified-lead acceptance from [X]% to [Y]%. |
| Content and SEO | Set the content strategy for a B2B fintech; [X] articles in six months brought organic sign-ups from [X] to [Y] a month. |
| Fractional leadership | Served as fractional head of marketing for [client type] for [months]: hired the first two marketers, set the annual plan and handed over a team running it. |
If you don’t have a number, describe the change in capability: “left the team with a working attribution model and a weekly dashboard they still use”. That’s a real result for a consultant.
How do you write a marketing consultant resume summary?
Two or three lines: your specialty, the clients you serve and one result that proves it. Treat the template below as a starting point and keep your own voice in it, since a summary that sounds like you is the one people remember.
Marketing consultant specializing in [specialty] for [client type]. [Years] years across [in-house, agency and independent] work, with [number] engagements for companies including [names or industries]. Recent work: [one result in one sentence].
Example:
Marketing consultant specializing in positioning and launches for B2B software companies. Eleven years across in-house product marketing and independent work, with 20+ engagements from Seed to public companies. Recent work: a repositioning that lifted demo requests 40% in one quarter.

What if you’re a consultant applying for an in-house job?
Hiring managers sometimes worry that consultants recommend and leave. Answer that on the page:
- Show ownership over time. Long retainers, interim roles and work you saw through to results.
- Show execution, not only strategy. Name the campaigns you ran, the tools you used and the teams you managed.
- Explain the move in one line in your summary or cover letter: you want to build something over years, not months.
- Mirror the posting’s title. If the role is “Director of Product Marketing”, make sure your bullets show the product marketing work, not the full consulting menu.
Our guide to writing a resume covers structure and format, and the marketing manager resume page shows how in-house readers scan for ownership.
What about consultants at a firm?
If you work for a consulting firm or agency, list the firm as the employer and your client projects as bullets, the same way an agency marketer would. Firm consultants often have title changes (consultant, senior consultant, manager); list them under the one employer with their dates so the promotions are visible.
What should a marketing consultant resume leave out?
- A logo wall without results. Names help, but only with what you did for them.
- Every small project. Five strong engagements beat fifteen thin ones.
- Services lists. “Branding, SEO, social, email, PR, events” reads as a menu. Pick the work you want more of.
- Client confidential details. Revenue figures or plans a client hasn’t made public don’t belong on a resume, even as proof.
FAQ
Should I list each client as a separate job?
Usually not. One entry for your consulting business with the engagements as bullets reads as a steady practice. The exception is a long interim or contract role with a real title, which can sit as its own sub-entry under the business.
How do I show results if my contracts are confidential?
Describe the client by industry and size instead of naming them, and use percentages or before-and-after comparisons rather than the client’s absolute numbers. “Cut cost per lead by a third for a regional healthcare network” proves the point without revealing anything private.
Is “marketing consultant” a real title on a resume?
Yes. It’s a common title for independent and firm work. If you ran your own business, “Founder” or “Principal” alongside it is also accurate. Use the title that describes what you did and that matches the roles you’re applying for.
Do I need a portfolio as well as a resume?
It helps, especially for positioning, content and creative work. A short case study per engagement, with the problem, approach and result, does more than samples alone. See our marketing portfolio guide.
How long should a marketing consultant resume be?
One page for under about ten years of experience, two pages for more. Our guide to resume length explains what to cut.
