Copywriter Resume: Examples, Summary and Template
A copywriter resume should read like a sample of your writing: clear, specific and short. Put your portfolio link in the header, write a two-line summary in your own voice, and give each role three to five bullets naming what you wrote, who it was for and what happened.
Key takeaways
- A copywriter resume is itself a writing sample, so tight, specific sentences matter as much as what they say.
- Strong copywriter bullets name what you wrote, who it was for and what happened, such as a launch, a test result, a client win or an award.
- Agency copywriters should show campaigns, creative partnerships with art directors and pitches, while in-house and SEO copywriters should show channels, volume and measured results.
- The portfolio link belongs in the header, because most hiring creative directors read the work before the resume.
- Junior copywriters can lead with spec work, ad school, freelance and writing from other jobs, labeled honestly.

What should a copywriter resume include?
A copywriter resume should include a portfolio link, a short summary, your experience with three to five specific bullets per role, a skills line and education. Everything on it should be as well written as the work you want to be hired for, because the reader is a writer or creative director who will notice.
They’re looking for:
- The work. A portfolio link at the top that opens to your best pieces.
- Range or depth. Campaigns, social, web, email, product, scripts, long-form; whichever the role needs.
- Your role. Concept and copy lead, or writing to someone else’s idea.
- Results. Launches, tests won, client decisions, awards.

Copy this structure and fill in the brackets with your real work.

How do you write a copywriter resume summary?
Write two lines that sound like you, naming the kind of writing you do and one thing worth noticing. This is the one place a copywriter can show voice on a resume, so don’t waste it on “creative and detail-oriented”.
Copywriter who writes [kind of work: social-first campaigns / launch copy / brand voice systems] for [kind of brands]. [Years] at [agencies / in-house]; most recently [campaign or result].
Conversion copywriter for [B2B SaaS / DTC / ecommerce] brands. I write the [landing pages / emails / ads] and run the tests that prove which words work: [one result].
These are scaffolding, not a script. Write yours the way you’d describe your work to someone you like, and keep the odd detail: they’re hiring your voice, not a template’s.
What makes a strong copywriter resume bullet?
A strong copywriter bullet says what you wrote, for whom, your role and what changed. If you don’t have a number, the client’s decision, a launch or recognition is a fine result.
| Instead of | Try |
|---|---|
| “Wrote copy for social media” | “Wrote [brand]’s launch campaign line and [number] social executions with an art director partner; [result the client shared]” |
| “Helped with pitches” | “Co-led creative as copywriter on [number] new-business pitches; [number] won” |
| “Wrote blog posts” | “Wrote [number] search-led articles a month; [metric] organic traffic in [time]” |
| “Wrote emails” | “Rewrote the welcome series subject lines and body copy; open rate rose from [X]% to [Y]% in A/B tests” |
| “Responsible for brand voice” | “Built [brand]’s voice guidelines and trained [number] writers and teams to use them” |
Agency vs in-house copywriter bullets
Agency copywriters should show campaigns, briefs answered with an art director, pitches and creative reviews, plus any awards: agency creative directors hire for ideas. In-house and conversion copywriters should show the channels, the volume and measured results: the business wants proof the words worked. If you’re switching sides, our in-house vs agency marketing page explains what each values.
What skills should a copywriter list?
List the skills the job asks for that you’d happily be tested on. Group them.
| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Writing | Concepting, headlines, scripts, long-form, UX and product copy, editing |
| Channels | Social, video, out-of-home, web, email, paid search and social ads |
| Strategy | Brand voice, messaging, creative briefs |
| Optimization | A/B testing, SEO, conversion copy |
| Tools | Google Docs, Figma, a CMS, email platforms, SEO tools |
How do you write a copywriter resume with no experience?
Lead with your portfolio and anything you’ve written for a real audience: a student publication, a nonprofit, a friend’s business, a newsletter, writing from a non-marketing job. Spec work from ad school or your own portfolio is normal for juniors; label it “spec” and put your best idea first.
Hiring managers expect junior copywriters to need training. What they look for is ideas and clean writing, and you can show both before your first job. Our guide to becoming a copywriter covers building that first book.
How do you tailor a copywriter resume to a posting?
Find what the posting asks for most and move those bullets to the top of each role. A posting for an agency writer wants campaigns and concepting; a posting for an SEO or product writer wants channel results and volume. Our copywriter job description shows how those postings differ. Then pair it with a copywriter cover letter that sounds just as much like you.
FAQ
How long should a copywriter resume be?
One page. Copywriters are hired partly for economy with words, and a tight page proves it.
Should a copywriter resume be creative?
The writing should be; the layout can stay simple. A clever format that a hiring system can’t read costs more than it earns.
What’s the difference between a copywriter and content writer resume?
A copywriter resume leads with campaigns, ads and conversion copy; a content writer resume leads with articles, search results and editorial volume. Our copywriter vs content writer page explains the split.
Should freelance copywriters list every client?
No. Group freelance work under one entry with dates, then list the strongest two to four clients or projects as bullets.
What do I do if my best work was never published?
Include it as “unpublished” or “spec” in your portfolio and describe the brief honestly on the resume if it’s relevant. Creative directors judge the thinking.
