AEO Specialist: What an AI Search (GEO) Specialist Does
An AEO specialist (answer engine optimization, also called GEO or AI search specialist) works to get a brand found, cited and described accurately in AI answers such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. It's a new role that grows out of SEO, content and PR, and most of the work is still good SEO plus measuring a new kind of visibility.
Key takeaways
- An AEO specialist works on how a brand shows up in AI-generated answers, including whether it's mentioned, cited and described correctly.
- AEO, GEO and AI search optimization are mostly used as names for the same job.
- Google says there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal SEO best practices.
- The new parts of the job are measuring AI visibility across many prompts and influencing the third-party sources AI answers draw on.
- Most AEO specialists come from SEO, content strategy or digital PR, and the SEO skills transfer directly.

AEO is a new label on a familiar problem: making sure people find you when they ask a question. The difference is that the answer increasingly comes from an AI tool that reads many pages and writes its own reply. An AEO specialist’s job is to make the brand show up in that reply, accurately, and to prove it with numbers.
What does an AEO specialist do?
An AEO specialist tracks how AI tools answer the questions a brand’s customers ask, finds where the brand is missing or misdescribed, and fixes it through the brand’s own content, its technical setup and the other sources AI tools rely on. The job title varies: AEO specialist, GEO specialist, AI search specialist, or an SEO role with “AI visibility” in the description.
A typical week:
- Run the prompt set: check how ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity and others answer the brand’s important questions, and log mentions, citations and accuracy.
- Compare with rivals: which brands get named, which sources get cited, and where the brand is absent.
- Fix the brand’s pages: clear answers near the top, comparison tables, up-to-date facts, pages for questions customers really ask.
- Check access: make sure search and AI crawlers can reach and read the important pages.
- Work with PR and partnerships: get the brand accurately covered in the reviews, lists, forums and publications that answers cite.
- Report: AI visibility trends next to normal search traffic, and what changed.
AEO vs SEO
AEO builds on SEO; it doesn’t replace it. Google says plainly that the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features, and that “there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary” (Google Search Central). What changes is what you measure and how many sources you have to influence.
| SEO | AEO / GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank and earn clicks in search results | Be mentioned, cited and described accurately in AI answers |
| Where it shows up | Search results pages | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, assistants |
| Main measure | Rankings, clicks, organic traffic | Mention rate, citation share, accuracy across a prompt set |
| Unit of work | Keywords and pages | Questions (prompts) and the sources answers draw on |
| Sources you influence | Mainly your own site and links to it | Your site plus reviews, forums, lists, press and video |
| Tools | Search Console, analytics, SEO platforms | The same, plus AI visibility tracking tools |
Two practical points matter for measurement. Google counts clicks from its AI features inside the normal Search Console performance report, under the Web search type, rather than in a separate report (Google). Other AI tools send little referral data. So most AEO measurement means running a fixed set of prompts on a schedule and counting what comes back.
What AEO is not
AEO isn’t a set of hidden tricks. Google also says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema markup to appear in its AI features. Proposed conventions like llms.txt exist, and some sites publish one, but treat them as optional. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed placement in AI answers.

Skills and tools
An AEO specialist needs a solid SEO foundation plus the habit of measuring something that changes every time you ask.
| Skill or tool | What it’s for | How to show it on a resume |
|---|---|---|
| Technical SEO | Making sure pages can be crawled, rendered and read | An access or rendering problem you found and fixed |
| Content structure | Answer-first pages, tables, FAQs that AI tools can quote | Pages rebuilt and their visibility before and after |
| Prompt tracking | Measuring mentions and citations across AI tools | A prompt set you built and the trend you reported |
| SEO platforms and AI visibility tools | Tracking search and AI visibility | Tool named, plus what the data led you to do |
| Search Console and analytics | Search clicks, including AI features, and referrals | A report that combined both |
| Digital PR and source building | Coverage in the sources answers cite | Placements earned and the prompts they affected |
| Competitive analysis | Seeing who AI answers favor and why | A gap you closed against a named rival |
| Brand demand measurement | Tracking brand interest over time | A share of search trend you reported |
Know the crawler basics, because AI search tools document them. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot to show sites in ChatGPT’s search features and a separate crawler, GPTBot, for model training, and each can be allowed or blocked on its own (OpenAI). Perplexity’s PerplexityBot surfaces sites in its search results and, the company says, isn’t used to train AI models (Perplexity). Blocking the search crawlers keeps a site out of those answers.
A resume line for AEO work that ties action to a measured result:
Built a [X]-prompt AI visibility tracker across [AI tools]; rewrote [X] pages and earned coverage in [sources], raising [brand]'s mention rate from [X%] to [Y%] against [competitors] in [timeframe].
How to become an AEO specialist
Most AEO specialists are SEO or content people who added AI visibility to their work before the title existed. Because the field is so new, nobody has years of AEO experience, which means a few months of careful, documented testing puts you close to the front. The steps:
- Learn SEO first. Crawling, indexing, on-page and content. Our guide on how to become an SEO specialist covers the foundation.
- Read the official guidance. Google’s page on AI features and the crawler documentation from OpenAI and Perplexity. Interviewers like candidates who know what’s documented and what’s guesswork.
- Build a prompt set for a real brand. Pick 30-50 questions customers ask. Run them across a few AI tools every week and log who’s mentioned and cited.
- Make a change and measure it. Rewrite pages on your own site or a client’s, then track whether answers change. Be honest about noise.
- Learn the PR side. AI answers lean on third-party sources. Knowing how to earn reviews, list placements and press is a real edge.
- Apply for SEO roles that mention AI search, and for AEO or GEO titles at agencies and brands.
How to get experience without the title
If you’re in SEO, add an AI visibility section to your monthly report and propose a small project around it. If you’re in content, rebuild a few key pages answer-first and track them in AI tools. If you’re in PR, map which publications AI answers cite in your category and pitch them. Pick the one that matches your current job and write your first ten prompts this week.
Career path
AEO is new enough that the ladder is still forming, and most people move between SEO and AEO titles freely.
| Before | The role | After |
|---|---|---|
| SEO specialist, content strategist, digital PR specialist, content marketer, web analyst | AEO specialist, GEO specialist, AI search specialist, SEO specialist (AI search) | Senior AEO or SEO manager, head of search or organic growth, content strategy lead, AEO consultant |
How much does an AEO specialist make?
BLS has no separate figure for AEO specialists. They’re counted with market research analysts and marketing specialists, and our SEO specialist salary page shows those figures by percentile and state. Because the title is new, compare postings for SEO roles at the same level too.
Interview questions to expect
AEO interviews test your SEO foundation, how you’d measure AI visibility and whether you separate evidence from hype. Expect:
- "How is AEO different from SEO?" Tests whether you know what’s the same and what’s new.
- "How would you measure our visibility in AI answers?" Tests your prompt set design, sampling and reporting.
- "Here’s how ChatGPT describes us. What would you fix first?" Tests diagnosis: your pages, outdated facts or the sources being cited.
- "What would you tell a CMO who wants a guaranteed spot in AI Overviews?" Tests honesty and stakeholder handling.
- "Should we block AI crawlers?" Tests whether you know the difference between search and training crawlers.
- "Tell me about a test where visibility changed. How do you know it wasn’t noise?" Tests measurement discipline.
Bring your own prompt log if you have one: walking an interviewer through what you tracked and what you’d do differently is more persuasive than a rehearsed definition. Explain it the way you’d explain it to a curious colleague, in your own words, and let your interest in the topic show. Our SEO manager interview questions page covers the search questions you’ll get alongside these.
Research the company before the interview
Before an AEO interview, check how AI tools describe the company today, which competitors they name instead and which sources they cite. Recon researches a company’s marketing before the interview, including how AI answers describe it, so you arrive with specific gaps to discuss.
FAQ
What’s the difference between AEO and GEO?
They describe the same work. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) both mean getting a brand mentioned and cited in AI-generated answers. Companies pick whichever term they prefer.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. Google says its AI features follow the same SEO best practices, and AI tools still draw on web pages to answer. AEO adds new measurement and more attention to third-party sources on top of SEO.
Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file for AEO?
Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema markup to appear in its AI features. Clear, crawlable, accurate content matters more. An llms.txt file is optional.
Can I become an AEO specialist without SEO experience?
You can, and SEO basics are learnable in a few weeks of focused study, so start there. Content strategists and digital PR specialists also move into the role, because writing answer-first content and earning third-party coverage are core parts of it.
Is there an AEO specialist certification?
Not a widely recognized one yet, because the field is new and the AI tools change quickly. Some courses and agencies offer their own certificates, which can help you learn but carry less weight with employers than a project you can show. A before-and-after case study of a few pages you improved for AI answers says more than a badge.
