Company teardown
Duolingo Marketing Strategy: Competitors, Social Media and Positioning
Duolingo's marketing runs on attention it earns rather than buys. It holds 92.1% of branded search in its category and dwarfs its rivals on TikTok while spending 8.4% of revenue on ads. The weak spots are a "proven" claim every rival also makes, a fandom that lives in organic but not in paid, and branded search that fell 5% in a year.
Key takeaways
- Duolingo's marketing runs mostly on attention it earns, through in-house social, character-led partnerships and a small paid footprint.
- Duolingo held 92.1% of US branded search in its category in the October 2026 brief, far ahead of Babbel, Rosetta Stone, Busuu and Memrise.
- Duolingo earned a 32K median TikTok engagement per post in the October 2026 snapshot, against Babbel's 314.
- Duolingo spent 8.4% of revenue on advertising in the brief's financial data.
- The weak spots in Duolingo's marketing are a \"proven\" claim every rival also makes, a fandom that lives in organic but not paid, and branded search that fell 5% in a year.
Duolingo is the rare brand whose marketing people outside marketing can describe: the green owl, the guilt-trip reminders, the TikToks that read like a person runs them. This teardown puts numbers on that reputation and looks at what’s underneath it. It’s built from a Recon brief run on October 22, 2026, against Babbel, Rosetta Stone, Busuu and Memrise, with every figure linked to its source at the end of the page.
Duolingo’s marketing in 60 seconds
Duolingo leads its category on attention and affection. It holds 92.1% US share of branded search Ahrefs, earns a 32K median TikTok engagement per post against Babbel's 314 social, and its owned-post comment sentiment is the warmest in the set (+53 on 49 comments vs Babbel's +28 on 11) comments. All of this sits on a business that grew revenue 38.7% in the fiscal year ended December 2025 while holding ad spend at 8.4% of revenue SEC.
Underneath, growth is slowing. DAU growth fell from 49% in Q1 2025 to 36% in Q3 context 5, 2026 guidance is about 20% DAU growth and 10–12% bookings growth context 2, and US branded search is down 5.0% year on year Ahrefs.
Who are Duolingo’s competitors?
Duolingo’s closest competitors in US consumer language learning are Babbel, Rosetta Stone, Busuu and Memrise. On search demand, social engagement and sentiment, none of them is close.
| Brand | Net sentiment (comments) | TikTok median engagement/post (rate) | Creators / paid share (#hashtag) | Active US Meta ads | Revenue YoY / ad spend % rev (FY ended Dec 2025) | Share of search (chg YoY) |

Sources for the table: comments social creators ads SEC Ahrefs.
- Sentiment and social: On owned-post sentiment and TikTok engagement, Duolingo is in a different league from its rivals commentssocial. The Reddit samples (8 and 1 comments) are too thin to rank anyone on unfiltered sentiment comments.
- Paid social: Rosetta Stone is the only rival active on Meta. Its 133 ads ads have a median of 66 days live and a Sapphire ad that has run for 107 days ads, against Duolingo's 8-day median ads.
- Creator concentration is category-wide: The top 5 creators carry 88% of #duolingo engagement, against 85–98% for Babbel, Rosetta Stone and Busuu creators. That makes it a category trait rather than a Duolingo-specific risk. Chegg's figures cover all of its brands, not Busuu alone SEC.
How does Duolingo position itself?
Duolingo sells “free, fun and effective” learning, and it’s the only brand in the set built around fun, habit and a character. “Effective” is a different story: every rival claims it too.
| Brand | Promise (their words) | Audience (inferred) | Proof (their words) | Price tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duolingo | "Free, fun, and effective courses in languages and more." | Casual, cost-conscious habit builders | "research shows that it works" | value |
| Babbel | "Learn Fast. Talk Sooner." | Goal-driven adults wanting conversation | "92% of users improved their proficiency level in just 2 months*" | mass |
| Rosetta Stone | "Learn languages the right way and speak with confidence…" | Serious individuals, enterprise, schools | "proven Dynamic Immersion method, and top-rated TruAccent tool" | premium |
| Busuu | "Learn useful, real-world language skills and make authentic connections with Busuu." | Social learners with job or relationship goals | "Trusted by our global community of 120 million learners" | mass |
| Memrise | "Understand native speakers. Sound more like them." | Learners with a specific reason | "Trusted by 80 million learners" | unclear |
Source for the table: homepages.
- Overlap: Every brand stakes a claim on "effective" or proven learning, including Duolingo ("effective courses") and Babbel ("The effective way to learn a language online") homepages. Memrise defines itself directly against Duolingo's ground: "Unlike gamified apps with…" homepages.
- White space: Duolingo is the only brand leading on fun, habit and a character, "reminders from our friendly mascot, Duo the owl" homepages. It is also the only one stretching past languages ("languages, chess, and more!") homepages. The unclaimed ground is fun backed by proof of results. No rival can say that in Duolingo's voice.
- What customers say back: The "fun" half of the promise lands. Ad jokes and fandom (35%) and streaks and reminders (26%, 67% positive) dominate the conversation comments. Reminders also carry friction; one TikTok commenter wrote "Duolingo deja de acosarme por correo..." ("Duolingo, stop harassing me by email") comments. The "effective" half is the contested one (Weakness 1).
Duolingo’s social media and marketing engine
The engine is in-house social, character-led partnerships and a small paid footprint. This section covers recent campaigns, agencies, leadership, the creator footprint and paid ads.
- Recent work:
- "Duolingo on Ice" (2024-04) was a mock multilingual musical built for earned media, made with Caviar, Radke Films, Loom Post and Edelman campaigns 6.
- "Make It Fun" (2025-11) was a global campaign with Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam, Final Frontier and Le Cube agencies 3.
- The 2026 direction is character IP and partnerships. These include Global Taco Day with Taco Bell across seven markets (2026-10) partnerships 2, Duo on Love Island US (2026-10) partnerships 3, and a 70-product MINISO collection in China (2026-06) partnerships 5.
- Several recent "campaign" listings are credited to schools: S.I. Newhouse School (2026-05, 2025-04) campaigns 1campaigns 5, UNITEC Honduras (2026-03) campaigns 2 and Miami Ad School Madrid (2025-02) campaigns 4. These may be student work and worth confirming, not read as brand direction.
- Agencies:
- Social has been run in-house (2025-02) agencies 1, and so has creative (2025-03) agencies 2.
- W+K Amsterdam handled "Make It Fun" (2025-11) agencies 3.
- No media, PR or influencer agency, and no agency review, was found in the research.
- Creators & community:
- #duolingo shows 38 creators, 3% paid or gifted, 88% of engagement in the top 5, and a mostly nano tier (16 nano, 2 micro, 2 mid) creators.
- Creator videos run a median of 12 seconds, against 61s for Babbel and 82s for Busuu formats. That fits joke-format fandom.
- The top performers by engagement rate are @robloxplayererror (55.17% on one post, paid or gifted) and @mia.lingo (72 followers, 51.39% on one post, organic) creators.
- Three prospects to vet:
- @frenchwithfer (96K followers, 18.72% on one post): "Learning French with videos like this feels effortless and fun!" This fits the "fun" promise creators.
- @graceandlanguages225 (13K followers, 8.1× followers on one post) teaches comprehensible input. This could lend the learning credibility Weakness 1 needs creators.
- @nextstopcat (30K followers, 198.83%) tags #habits. This fits the streak story creators.
- Check all three for rival deals. @anispanish.expert, for example, tags #learnwithfrazaai, which suggests ties to another app creators.
- Creative & paid social:
- All 15 most-shown Meta ads are dynamic "Install now" units ads.
- The longest-running, "Learn a language for free with fun lessons designed to keep you motivated!", has run for 8 days ads.
- Rosetta Stone's Sapphire ad has run for 107 days ads.
- On Google, Duolingo's sampled creatives are 75% video, against Babbel's 70% text ads.
- In organic posts, reels earn a median of 24K engagements against 17K for carousels (10 posts) formats. Strong hooks are celebrity and human stories, such as "Meet Daryl and Alexa, who just got married thanks to Duolingo! 💍" with 51K engagements formats.
- Leadership:
- Emmanuel Orssaud became CMO effective August 17, 2025 leadership 2. He reports to CEO Luis von Ahn and owns social, performance, communications, events, in-house creative, strategy, insights and operations leadership 2. He is the first CMO since Cammie Dunaway left in July 2022 leadership 2.
- The head of communications left on July 31, 2025, with interim cover in place leadership 9.
- The public face of social left for DoorDash in September 2025 leadership 10.
- No senior marketing hire since Orssaud was found. This VP is likely the first senior brand hire under a new CMO, inheriting a voice whose authors have moved on.
Where could Duolingo’s marketing improve?
These are the three weaknesses the brief found, each with the evidence behind it and how severe it is.
Weakness 1: "Effective" is claimed but not owned (high severity)
Duolingo's homepage promises "Free, fun, and effective courses" and asserts "research shows that it works" homepages. One in three distinct ad copies in the sampled Meta ads sells "effective learning" ads, for example: "Duolingo is the effective way to learn a language" ads. That line is nearly word for word Babbel's homepage line, "The effective way to learn a language online" homepages. Babbel backs its version with a number: "92% of users improved their proficiency level in just 2 months*" homepages.
The audience is split on the same point. "Learning effectiveness" makes up 12% of Duolingo's conversation, at 43% positive and 43% negative comments. One Reddit commenter wrote: "No, no lo es. Aprendes muy pocas cosas en mucho tiempo" ("You learn very little in a lot of time") comments. The less filtered Reddit read sits at +0 on 8 comments, against +53 on owned posts comments. Both samples are small.
Meanwhile, the company's stated priority is "teaching quality" alongside user growth context 5. Duolingo already has the research claim. Making it concrete, in its own playful voice, would defend the one promise a rival is contesting with proof. It would also give the move into chess, math and music context 6 a credibility base.
Weakness 2: The fandom lives in organic, not in paid or YouTube (medium severity)
The brand's character works. "Ad jokes and fandom" is the largest conversation theme at 35% of comments, 95% positive comments. "Duo x Stray Kids? Best. Day. Ever." earned 477K engagements, about 23 times the Instagram median of 21K social.
Paid social on Meta looks different. Duolingo has 21 active US ads ads. Of the 15 most-shown:
- all are dynamic ads,
- all use the "Install now" call to action,
- none is a partnership ad,
- all 15 are new in the last 14 days, with a median of 8 days live ads.
Creator footage may still run unlabelled inside those ads ads.
YouTube is the second gap. Duolingo has 7.0M subscribers there but posted once in the last 30 days social, even though 75% of its sampled Google ad creatives are video ads.
Testing character- and partnership-led creative in paid would show whether the brand's strongest asset can also do acquisition work. Binet and Field found that brand-building effects compound over the long term while activation effects are short-lived.
Weakness 3: Attention is not turning into more demand (medium severity)
US branded search for "duolingo" averaged 1.8M a month, down 5.0% year on year Ahrefs. Share of search rose to 92.1% (+0.5 pts) only because every rival except Busuu also fell Ahrefs. In practice, Duolingo's demand is the category's demand.
Several numbers point the same way:
- DAU growth has stepped down to a 23% year-on-year rise in Q2 2026 context 3.
- The company targets 100M DAUs by 2028 context 8.
- Ad spend has fallen from 13.0% of revenue (FY ended December 2022) to 8.4% (FY ended December 2025) SEC.
- User growth is now under public scrutiny: a pension fund made allegations in October 2026 about the February 2026 guidance context 2.
Sharp's work says brands grow by reaching more, and lighter, buyers. The data suggests the social reach is not yet lifting search demand. That is worth testing against internal brand-tracking, which is not visible from outside.
Interviewing at Duolingo?
You don’t need to memorize these numbers. Pick the one finding you’d most like to talk about, decide what you’d do about it, and say it in your own words: a point of view you actually hold is what an interviewer remembers.
This page is the public part of a Recon brief. The version you’d get for your own interview adds talking points tied to your experience, a 30-60-90 day plan, the questions to ask, the curveballs the panel is likely to throw, and the rest of Recon’s tools: a tailored resume, a cover letter and prep for each round.
