Which BLS figure covers product marketing manager roles?

BLS doesn’t publish a separate figure for product marketing managers. They’re counted with marketing managers (11-2021), the same group as brand, campaign and growth marketing managers, up to VPs. So the numbers above are for the whole group, not for PMMs alone.

Where a product marketer sits in that range depends mostly on level. Product marketing has its own ladder: associate PMM, PMM, senior PMM, then group or principal PMM and director of product marketing. A first PMM role usually sits in the lower half of the range; a senior PMM or director running launches for a major product line sits toward the middle and above. For the general group, see our marketing manager salary page.

How to use this in a salary negotiation

Use the range to anchor, not to argue. Find where the role sits: an associate PMM belongs near the 25th percentile, a senior PMM leading major launches near the 75th or above. Then check the posting, since a growing number of states require employers to publish a pay range. If the posting’s range and the BLS range disagree, the posting wins: it’s the budget for this job. The BLS figure is still useful when there’s no range at all, or when you’re asked for your number first. Bringing up pay can feel awkward, but a number backed by public data is a normal, professional thing to discuss, and hiring managers expect the conversation. Put it in your own words and your own tone, say it once, then give them room to respond. Our salary negotiation guide covers what to say and when, and salary expectations covers how to answer the question in an interview. Before your first call, write down your number and where it sits in the range above, so it’s ready when the question comes.

FAQ

Why doesn’t BLS publish product marketing manager salaries?

BLS groups jobs by occupation, not by title. Product marketing manager is a title within marketing management, so PMMs are counted with marketing managers, and that group’s range is the closest public figure.

Do product marketing managers earn more than other marketing managers?

BLS data can’t answer this, because it doesn’t split marketing managers by specialty. The better comparison is the posted ranges for a PMM role and another marketing manager role at the same level and company.

How is product marketing manager pay structured?

Usually a base salary, an annual bonus, and at technology companies often equity. BLS figures include wages and some incentive pay, but not year-end bonuses, equity or benefits, so total pay at companies that grant stock can be well above the BLS figure.

How do I move into a higher-paying product marketing role?

Move up the ladder by owning bigger launches and more of the positioning work, or move to a company where product marketing is central to how it sells. Our guide to becoming a product marketing manager covers the path, and the product marketing manager interview questions cover the interviews.

How much does a senior or associate product marketing manager make?

BLS doesn’t publish figures by level, so associate, senior and principal product marketing managers all fall in the marketing managers range above. Associate PMMs usually start toward the bottom of that range, and senior and principal PMMs who own a product line or a major launch sit toward the top. Equity can add a lot at technology companies, and the BLS wage figures don’t include it.

How much does a director of product marketing make?

Directors of product marketing are counted with marketing managers too, usually in the upper part of the range, because they run a team of PMMs and own positioning across products. The marketing director salary page explains where director-level roles usually sit.
