## Look up a salary

Use the lookup on the web page, or the tables on each salary page.

## Which occupation should I pick?

Pick the group your job is counted in, which isn't always the one with your title in it. BLS publishes occupations, not job titles:

- **Marketing managers** covers managers, directors, heads of marketing, VPs and brand managers.
- **Market research analysts and marketing specialists** covers most coordinator, specialist, analyst, SEO, social and digital roles.
- **Writers and authors** covers copywriters.
- **Art directors** covers creative directors.

Each [salary page](/career-salaries/) explains where its title sits.

## How to read the result

The median is the middle: half of people in that occupation and state earn more, half less. Your own figure depends on level, industry and company. A first job usually sits well below the median, a senior role above it. Treat the number as a starting point for your own research, and pair it with the posting's range when there is one.

Some states are missing for some occupations. BLS leaves a figure out when too few people were surveyed for it to be reliable.

The figures are base pay, not total pay: they don't include year-end bonuses, equity or benefits. And they cover employees, not freelancers.

## FAQ

### How current is this data?

It's from the [BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/oes/) May 2025 survey, the latest published. BLS releases a new survey each spring.

### Why is my state's figure so different from the national one?

Mostly cost of living and where the employers are. States with big metros and company headquarters pay more.

### Can I use this in a salary negotiation?

Yes, as a reference point, especially when the posting has no range. Our [salary negotiation guide](/guides/salary-negotiation/) covers how.

### Where can I see marketing manager salary by state in one table?

The [marketing manager salary page](/career-salaries/marketing-manager/) lists the median for every state BLS publishes, highest first. Most of our salary pages have the same state table for their occupation.
