# Marketing Interview Questions: What They Ask at Every Level

> Most marketing interviews test the same four things at different depths. Can you do the work, can you make good calls with limited data, can you work with other people, and do you understand this company? The questions below come up for almost every marketing role; the role pages go deeper.

## How are marketing interviews structured?

Most run in three to five rounds: a recruiter screen, a hiring manager interview, a panel with peers and partners, and often a case or presentation. Senior roles usually add meetings with the CEO or other executives.

The level changes what they're listening for. A coordinator or specialist is judged mostly on craft and reliability: can you run the channel, hit the deadline, read the numbers? A manager is judged on owning a plan and getting results through others. A director, VP or CMO is judged on strategy, budget, team building and how they work with the rest of the leadership team.

The best preparation is the same at every level. Know the company's marketing before you walk in, have four or five stories from your own work with real numbers in them, and practice saying them out loud. That's a manageable list, and most people already have the stories; they just haven't picked them yet. Our guide to [how to prepare for an interview](/guides/how-to-prepare-for-an-interview/) has the full plan.

## Questions asked in almost every marketing interview

These come up whatever the title. Have an answer ready for each, and start with the first two: they come up in nearly every first round.

| Question | What they're checking |
|---|---|
| Tell me about yourself. | Whether you can tell a clear, short story that points at this role. See [how to answer it](/guides/tell-me-about-yourself/). |
| Why do you want to work here? | That you've done your homework and want this company, not any job. See [how to answer it](/guides/why-do-you-want-to-work-here/). |
| Walk me through a campaign you're proud of. | Your part in it, the goal, the decisions you made and the result in numbers. |
| What's a campaign that didn't work, and what did you learn? | Honesty, and whether you change your approach when the data says so. |
| How do you measure whether marketing is working? | That you connect activity to business results, rather than stopping at clicks and reach. |
| What do you think of our marketing? | Whether you've looked closely, and whether you can give a fair, useful critique. |
| How would you spend your first 90 days? | Whether you'd listen before acting, and what you'd prioritize. See the [30-60-90 day plan guide](/guides/30-60-90-day-plan/). |
| Tell me about a time you disagreed with a stakeholder. | How you handle conflict with sales, product, finance or creative. |
| How do you decide where to spend a limited budget? | Your judgment on trade-offs, and whether you can explain them. |
| Which channel would you cut first, and why? | Whether you know what really drives results, as opposed to what's comfortable. |
| What marketing trend do you think is overrated? | Independent thinking, without cynicism. |
| How do you work with sales or product? | That you see marketing as part of how the company grows, not a separate team. |
| What are your weaknesses? | Self-awareness, and proof you're working on it. See [how to answer it](/guides/what-are-your-weaknesses/). |
| What questions do you have for us? | Curiosity and judgment. See [questions to ask the hiring manager](/guides/questions-to-ask-the-hiring-manager/). |

## How to answer marketing interview questions well

Answer the question first, then prove it with one specific example. A useful shape is situation, what you did, the result, and what you'd do differently. Keep each answer under two minutes unless they ask for more. Prepare the points, not the exact words, and let your answers sound like you: interviewers are deciding whether they want to work with you, so your personality is part of the answer, not a distraction from it.

Bring numbers you can stand behind: the budget, the target, what moved and by how much. If you can't share exact figures, say so and use percentages or ranges. Keep them accurate rather than rounding up; a modest number you can explain is stronger than a big one you can't.

For anything about the company, use real research. A candidate who can say "your share of search has slipped while your two main rivals grew" is having a different conversation from one who says "I love the brand". Our guide on [how to research a company before an interview](/guides/how-to-research-a-company-before-an-interview/) shows where to look.

## Interview questions by role

Each role page below lists the questions you're most likely to get at that level, what they're checking and how to answer, with example answers you can adapt.

## FAQ

### How many rounds are there in a marketing interview?

Usually three to five: a recruiter screen, a hiring manager interview, a panel, and often a case or presentation. Senior roles add executive meetings, so a VP or CMO process can run longer.

### Do marketing interviews include a case study or presentation?

Many do, especially from manager level up. You might get a take-home brief, a plan for the company's own brand or a live problem in the room. Our guide to the [marketing case study presentation](/guides/marketing-case-study-presentation/) covers how to handle each.

### What should I bring to a marketing interview?

A short list of your best results with numbers, two or three work samples you can talk through, notes on the company's marketing, and your questions for them. For a final round, a one-page plan or a few slides can help if they invite it.

### How do I answer a question when I don't have direct experience?

Say so, then show the closest thing you've done and how you'd approach it. A clear "I haven't run TikTok Shop, but I ran our Amazon launch, and here's how I'd apply that" beats a vague answer that pretends.
