# Marketing Cover Letter Examples and How to Write One

> A good marketing cover letter is 250 to 350 words, opens on something specific about the company, proves two or three of the posting's top asks with real results from your resume, and asks for a conversation. Treat it like a campaign brief for yourself, not a second resume.

## What makes a marketing cover letter work?

It shows you understand the company's marketing before you've been asked. Most cover letters say the candidate is passionate and results-driven. A good one names something the brand is doing, says what you'd do with it, and backs that up with a result.

Marketing hiring managers read cover letters as a writing sample, which works in your favor: a short, specific letter in your own voice shows them how you'd write a brief or a campaign line before they've met you.

## How long should a marketing cover letter be?

Aim for 250 to 350 words, which is three or four short paragraphs. That fits on one screen without scrolling. A leadership role can run a little longer if the extra lines carry real evidence, never because there's more to say about yourself.

## How to write a marketing cover letter, step by step

Write it in this order, and cut anything that doesn't do one of these jobs.

1. **Read the posting twice.** Underline the three asks that appear first or most often. Those are what the letter has to prove.
2. **Find one specific thing about the company.** A recent campaign, a product launch, a shift in their social content, a gap you noticed. Our guide to [researching a company before an interview](/guides/how-to-research-a-company-before-an-interview/) covers where to look.
3. **Match each ask to a resume line.** For every ask, pick the one result that proves it. If you can't prove an ask, leave it out rather than claim it.
4. **Write the opening last.** Once you know your evidence, open with the company fact and connect it to why you're writing.
5. **Close with a clear next step.** Ask for a conversation, and thank them once.

## A structure you can reuse

Four paragraphs is enough for almost every marketing role.

- **Opening (2–3 sentences):** the role, one specific observation about the company, and why it caught your attention.
- **Proof (3–5 sentences):** two or three results that match the posting's top asks, each with its number.
- **Fit (2–3 sentences):** what you'd bring to their situation in particular, often a first idea or priority.
- **Close (1–2 sentences):** ask for a conversation.

## Marketing cover letter example

This is a general example for a mid-level marketing role. Replace everything in brackets with your own facts, then reread it and change any sentence that doesn't sound like you. They're hiring a person, and your phrasing is part of what they're reading for.

```text
Dear [Hiring manager's name],
I'm applying for the [Role] position at [Company]. I've been following [specific campaign, launch or change in their marketing], and [one sentence on what it suggests about where the brand is heading].
At [Current or recent company], I [result that matches the posting's first ask, with a number]. I also [second result, matched to the second ask]. Both came from the same habit: [how you work, in one plain phrase, e.g. "testing small before scaling"].
[Company]'s posting talks about [the third ask in their words]. My first priority would be [one concrete idea tied to the observation in your opening], because [short reason].
I'd welcome the chance to talk about how I could help with [the goal from the posting]. Thank you for considering my application.
Best regards,
[Your name]
## What marketing hiring managers look for
They're reading for judgment, specificity and writing quality.
- **Evidence over adjectives.** "Grew email revenue [X%] in [timeframe]" beats "data-driven and creative".
- **Their language, used honestly.** If the posting says "lifecycle", don't say "CRM" unless it's the same work.
- **A point of view.** One sentence on what you'd do shows you think like a marketer.
- **Clean writing.** Short sentences, and the company and product names spelled exactly right. Read it aloud once before you send it.
## FAQ
### Do marketing jobs still need a cover letter?
Many don't require one, but a short, specific letter helps when the application allows it, and it takes less time than it seems once you have the structure. For marketing roles it doubles as a writing sample, so a good one can set you apart from applicants who skip it.
### Should I address the cover letter to a specific person?
Yes, if you can find the hiring manager's name on the posting or LinkedIn. If you can't, "Dear [Team name] hiring team" reads better than "To whom it may concern".
### Can I reuse the same cover letter for every application?
Reuse the structure, not the letter. The opening and the proof paragraph should change for every company, because that's the part that shows you did the work.
### Should I mention salary in a cover letter?
Only if the posting asks you to. Otherwise leave pay for the recruiter screen, where you can discuss it with more context.
