# Starbucks Marketing Strategy: Competitors, Social Media and Positioning

> Starbucks still owns most of the coffee-chain search demand, with 73.4% of branded search in its set, though that slipped 1.5 points in a year. Since "Hello Again" its campaigns have sold the coffeehouse, while the channels customers see daily sell seasonal treats and at-home products. Dutch Bros grew revenue 27.9% while spending a similar share of revenue on ads.

## Key takeaways

- Starbucks held 73.4% of branded search in its coffee-chain set in October 2026, down from 74.9% a year earlier, according to Ahrefs data.
- Since the \"Hello Again\" campaign in February 2025, Starbucks' campaigns have sold the coffeehouse experience.
- Starbucks' always-on channels, its homepage and most-shown Meta ads, sold seasonal treats and at-home creamer when the brief ran.
- Starbucks' closest US rivals in the brief are Dunkin', Dutch Bros, Peet's Coffee and Tim Hortons, with Dutch Bros gaining ground.

Starbucks is in the middle of a turnaround, and its marketing is part of the plan: back to the coffeehouse, fewer distractions, more reasons to sit down. This teardown checks how far that story has reached the channels customers actually see. It's built from a Recon brief run on October 23, 2026, against Dunkin', Dutch Bros, Peet's Coffee and Tim Hortons, with every figure linked to its source at the end of the page.

## Starbucks' marketing in 60 seconds

Starbucks still holds 73.4% of the set's branded search, down from 74.9% a year earlier [Ahrefs]. In the fiscal year ended September 2025 it grew revenue 2.8% while ad spend rose 45.6% to 2.3% of revenue [SEC]; Dutch Bros grew 27.9% at 2.4% in its fiscal year ended December 2025 [SEC]. Since "Hello Again" (Feb 2025) [campaigns 7], the campaigns have sold the coffeehouse, but the channels customers see every day sell Halloween treats and at-home creamer [homepages] [ads].

## Who are Starbucks' competitors?

Starbucks' closest competitors in US coffee chains are Dunkin', Dutch Bros, Peet's Coffee and Tim Hortons. Starbucks leads on search demand by a wide margin; Dutch Bros is the one gaining ground.

Sources: [comments] [social] [creators] [ads] [SEC] [Ahrefs]. *Qualified search term; share is likely understated.

- **No sentiment read for Starbucks.** No like-for-like sentiment comparison is possible. Dunkin's split between owned posts (+55) and Reddit (−60, on just 5 comments) shows how much owned-post comments skew toward fans [comments]. Internal social listening is the first thing to ask for.
- **Strongest organic creator base in the set.** Among brands with real creator volume, Starbucks's creator conversation is the least concentrated and among the least paid [creators].
- **Ad counts are not spend.** Dutch Bros runs 930 active Meta ads to Starbucks's 170 [ads]. Neither figure says anything about spend.

## How does Starbucks position itself?

This section sets Starbucks' promise, audience and proof against each rival's, in their own words.

| Brand | Promise (quote) | Audience (inferred) | Proof (quote) | Price tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starbucks | "It's a great day for coffee" | Seasonal treat seekers, café regulars | "Explore our menu of handcrafted drinks, order ahead, sign up for Starbucks® Rewards…" | Unclear |
| Dunkin' | "Sip into Dunkin' and enjoy America's favorite coffee and baked goods chain." | Everyday coffee-and-donut buyers | "…the largest coffee and donuts brand in the United States, with more than 14,000 restaurants…" | Unclear ($6 offer shown) |
| Dutch Bros | "We may sell coffee, but we're in the relationship business." | Young drive-thru customers | — | Unclear |
| Peet's Coffee | "WHEN IT COMES TO COFFEE, WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE BREWING." | Adult dark-roast and at-home buyers | "It's not witchcraft, just craft. 60 years of it to be exact." | Unclear |
| Tim Hortons | "Home of Canada's favourite coffee." | Canadian coffee drinkers | — | Unclear |

All copy from [homepages].

- **Overlap.** Four of the five homepages lead with the seasonal menu: "So delicious, it's frightening" (Starbucks), "Pumpkin Cloud Dunkalatte" (Dunkin'), "returning faves and NEW Autumn Berry drinks" (Dutch Bros), "Leave the Halloween candy to the kids" (Peet's) [homepages]. Seasonal is table stakes, not a point of difference.
- **White space.** No rival homepage claims the in-café experience. Dutch Bros claims relationships but sells itself as "your go-to drive thru," and Peet's leads with beans and K-Cups [homepages]. Starbucks's own "Together is the best place to be" [campaigns 1] and its café-refill line [homepages] already point at this territory.
- **What customers say back.** Starbucks's own comment sample (11) was too small to read themes against the "great day for coffee" promise [comments]. The only Starbucks mentions came in rival threads. One Reddit commenter wrote "we boycott Starbucks"; another said drinks "at Starbucks and Dunkin have never been able to be ordered vegan" [comments]. These are anecdotes, not a read.

## Who is Starbucks' target market?

Starbucks' homepage speaks to two groups at once: people coming for a seasonal or handcrafted drink, and café regulars who order ahead and use Starbucks Rewards. That reading comes from the brand's own homepage copy on the day of the brief, so treat it as how Starbucks presents itself, not a customer study. Management's "Back to Starbucks" plan points back toward the second group: people who sit down in the coffeehouse.

## Starbucks' social media and marketing engine

This section covers recent campaigns, agencies, leadership, social formats, creators and paid ads.

- **Recent work:**
  - "Hello Again" (Feb 2025, Anomaly LA) relaunched the brand as "The Starbucks Coffee Company" around the in-store experience [campaigns 7].
  - "Together" (Jan 2026, Anomaly LA) cast real customers and green-apron partners [campaigns 1].
  - "The Coffee Run" (Feb 2026, Anomaly) ran around the Milano Cortina opening ceremony with Team USA athletes [campaigns 6]. It builds on the Official Coffee Partner deal for LA28 and Team USA (Sep 2025) [partnerships 10].
  - Together these signal a human, community-led brand with a multi-year sports platform. Collaborations add reach: Beast Games (Jan 2026) [partnerships 9], Peanuts (Sep 2026) [partnerships 3], New Era (Aug 2026) [partnerships 7].
- **Agencies:**
  - WPP built a bespoke Team Starbucks unit (Ogilvy, VML, Landor) for US creative (Oct 2024) [agencies 1].
  - Anomaly was appointed to US creative three months later, with WPP keeping a diminished role (Jan 2025) [agencies 3].
  - Canada uses Leo Burnett Toronto (Dec 2023) [agencies 10]. EMEA uses Iris for creative and Havas Helia for customer engagement (Aug 2024) [agencies 4].
  - The new hire inherits a two-holding-company US setup that is under two years old.
- **Creators & community:**
  - The sample shows 39 creators, 5% paid, 78% top-five share [creators].
  - Top performers by engagement rate are all single-post spikes, not steady rates: @starbz.with.gracie (43 followers, 225.4×), @donishelbyy (991 followers, 41.2×), @tamaramacintyre (44K followers, 88.92%) [creators].
  - Creator videos run a median 51s, with 74% original sound [formats]. That reads as storytelling, not trend clips, and fits a community message.
  - Prospects to vet:
    - **@wholecupcoffee** (22K followers, 7.5× on one post). Craft-recipe content ("Brewing coffee, adding fresh mandarin and a little brown sugar…") fits the "handcrafted drinks" proof.
    - **@cafecito_pls** (7,678 followers, 9.9× on one post). At-home latte recipes fit the creamer line. Check whether the "no machines or fancy syrups" angle sits well with café pricing.
    - **@derekeatsla** (101K followers, 56.6% on one post). This creator was seen posting "#freedunkin". Check whether Dunkin' pays them before approaching [creators].
- **Creative & paid social:**
  - Starbucks has 170 active US Meta ads [ads].
  - The 15 most-shown are 60% video and 40% dynamic, with 6 of 15 run as partnership ads (Iamdaveperkins, KKandbabyJ) [ads].
  - The longest-running, at 24 days, are "no one said it was easy" and an Aerocano spot "like Belmont Cameli" [ads].
  - The contrast with Dutch Bros: its free-drink app ad has run 83 days, while Starbucks refreshes almost all of its top ads every two weeks [ads].
  - No organic format or hook data was available for Starbucks's own accounts [social].
- **Leadership:**
  - Starbucks eliminated the global CMO role effective April 2024 (Mar 2024) [leadership 1].
  - Tressie Lieberman became the first global chief brand officer (Nov 2024) [leadership 3]. Her remit spans marketing, product, digital, creative and data analytics [leadership 3].
  - Cheryl Gresham joined as SVP North America marketing (Feb 2025) [leadership 6]. Candice Beck is VP of brand engagement, partnership marketing and experiences (Dec 2025) [leadership 8].
  - Brian Niccol is chairman and CEO, leading "Back to Starbucks" (Oct 2025) [context 5].
  - Implication: this VP sits inside a CBO org that also owns product and digital. Clarify the line to Gresham and Beck early; the reporting line isn't stated anywhere.

## Where could Starbucks' marketing improve?

These are the three weaknesses the brief found, each with the evidence behind it and how severe it is.

### Weakness 1: Campaigns sell the coffeehouse; the always-on layer sells treats and creamer (high severity)

The campaigns all point to the coffeehouse:

- **"Hello Again" (Feb 2025)** reintroduced "The Starbucks Coffee Company" around personal interactions and the in-store experience [campaigns 7].
- **"Together" (Jan 2026)** says "Together is the best place to be" [campaigns 1].
- **"Made in Starbucks" (Jul 2026)** celebrates creativity in coffeehouses [campaigns 3].

The everyday channels say something else:

- **Paid social:** of the distinct copy in the 15 most-shown Meta ads, 56% sells at-home Sweet Cream creamer ("Real love is savoring Starbucks Sweet Cream creamer in your at-home coffee too.") and 22% sells the fall menu and protein add-on [ads].
- **Homepage:** the H1 is "So delicious, it's frightening." The only coffeehouse cue is "Enjoy your drink in the café and get refills of hot or iced brewed coffee or tea on us.*" [homepages].

Management frames "Back to Starbucks" around community coffeehouses and the in-store experience [context 2]. The always-on channels may be teaching a different story: Starbucks as a seasonal-treat brand. Closing the gap means a brief standard for always-on creative, not a new campaign. That makes it cheap and fast, so it ranks first.

### Weakness 2: Spend up sharply while share of demand slips (high severity)

Ad spend as a share of revenue has climbed every year:

| Fiscal year ended | Ad spend % of revenue |
|---|---:|
| Oct 2022 | 1.3% |
| Oct 2023 | 1.4% |
| Sep 2024 | 1.7% |
| Sep 2025 | 2.3% |

In the latest year that meant $870M of ad spend (+45.6%) against 2.8% revenue growth [SEC].

Search demand over the last 12 months tells a similar story [Ahrefs]:

- Starbucks branded search volume grew 4.8% YoY.
- Rivals grew faster: Dutch Bros +17.4%, Tim Hortons +9.3%, Dunkin' +28.5% (Dunkin' is measured on a qualified term, so compare its trend only).
- Starbucks's share of search fell 1.5 points.

Binet's work at the IPA found share of search tends to lead market share, so the slip deserves an explanation even with demand still growing.

One possible contributor, worth testing, is creative churn. 12 of the 15 most-shown Meta ads are under 14 days old, with a median of 4 days live. Dutch Bros's median is 57 days, and its app-signup ad has run 83 days [ads]. Brand tracking and the media plan aren't public. Treat this as a question about whether the added spend is building long-term brand effects, not as a verdict.

### Weakness 3: Organic creator energy, but no visible system to harness it (medium severity)

The creator base is a strength. The #starbucks sample shows 39 creators across 39 posts, only 5% paid or gifted, with the top five holding 78% of engagement. That is less concentrated than Dunkin' (94%), Dutch Bros (98%) or Tim Hortons (98%) [creators].

But the system around it is thin:

- **Peaks are one-offs.** The single biggest post was paid or gifted (@lizecsedy, 79K engagements). The standout organic posts came from tiny accounts with one viral post each: @donishelbyy (991 followers, 41K engagements) and @starbz.with.gracie (43 followers, 225.4× followers) [creators].
- **Few nano creators.** Nano accounts make up 5 of 19 tiered creators, versus 14 of 22 for Dunkin' and 13 of 20 for Dutch Bros [creators].
- **Owned posts are quiet.** The brand's own recent posts yielded only 11 usable comments, too few to read sentiment [comments].
- **Mentions happen elsewhere.** The unprompted Starbucks mentions in the sample sat in a rival's conversation: one Reddit commenter in a Dunkin' discussion wrote "we boycott Starbucks" [comments].

The fix plays to the brand's own creative choice. "Together" and "Made in Starbucks" cast real customers and partners, not actors [campaigns 1] [campaigns 3]. A standing small-creator and community program would extend that casting into everyday social.

## Interviewing at Starbucks?

You don't need to memorize these numbers. Pick the one finding you'd most like to talk about, decide what you'd do about it, and say it in your own words: a point of view you actually hold is what an interviewer remembers.

This page is the public part of a Recon brief. The version you'd get for your own interview adds talking points tied to your experience, a 30-60-90 day plan, the questions to ask, the curveballs the panel is likely to throw, and the rest of Recon's tools: a tailored resume, a cover letter and prep for each round. The [sample brief on Duolingo](/sample/) shows everything a full brief includes.
